How to Raise Kids Who Won’t Walk Away from Christianity
“Barna’s research showed that 61% of 20 somethings were spiritually disengaged that grew up in families that were very faithful….The research found that parents are more likely to raise spiritual champions if they accept the fact that from day one their parenting efforts will stray from the norm and will put them at odds with parents who are pursuing a more conventional approach. “
– Jeremy Pryor
In this short YouTube video, Jeremy Pryor and Jeff Bethke discuss the key findings in Barna’s research about parents who raise children who are counter-cultural and believe in the Bible. Parents who want to raise spiritual champions are willing to go against social norms. They think and behave very differently than the average parent.
One of the key ways they are different is their priority to teach their children a biblical worldview. These parents will help their children develop a biblical foundation to protect them from unbiblical ideas in the culture. One critical way parents can do this is by choosing classical Christian education. It is expensive; the curriculum is challenging, and, as with most impactful parenting decisions, it requires commitment. But the cost and commitment are worth the trade-off of raising a child who believes in the Bible and views the world through a biblical lens.
I encourage you to take some time this summer to consider and pray about your parenting efforts. How is the culture impacting your family, and in what ways do you need to stray from the parenting norm?
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them…” 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
